Thinking about artists who've made scientific contributions outside their fields, Goethe was the supreme cross-pollinator of nineteenth-century science and poetry. Although he had grown to be Europe's most revered poet, he's responsible for the cloud names we use today :) In all honesty, he wasn't very talented as a scientist. But although his contributions lie not in original scientific discoveries, he was pretty good at synthesizing and popularizing science with powerful metaphors that had an impact on the popular imagination.

His theory and color and emotion has no scientific validity, but it threw some light into aspects of perception like synesthesia, optical illusions, and the psychological effects of color (https://www.brainpickings.org/2012/08/17/goethe-theory-of-colours/).
